In many ways, the summer of 1963 was the high water mark of the folk music revival. After a two year hiatus, the prestigious Newport Folk Festival was back in business, this time under the direction of a non-profit foundation that was more dedicated to promoting traditional music than to making money.

This concert is important as a document of Bill Monroe's first appearance at Newport, it is also a rare chronicle of one of Monroe's best bands - one that never recorded together in the studio, and one which saw its prime players leave by the end of the year. But best of all, it is classic bluegrass at its best, played by some of the best of the field at the peak of their powers.
