The TURNING BLUE EP asks some big, hard questions, concerns that have arisen organically in the band. In 2009, MacDougall was in a serious car accident. He lost a year to recuperation, a year in which it was unclear if he would be physically be able to return to playing music. MacDougall joined the Gamblers fresh out of high school: there is no Plan B. But the fastest way through darkness is just to drive right through the middle of it, and Broken Gold has emerged galvanized by what they've endured. Supported by Ben Lance (guitar), fellow Gambler Rob Marchant (bass), and Rich Cali (drums), MacDougall has written and recorded his best songs to date, mature and thoughtful but with the jittery anxiousness of youth. Broken Gold invite comparisons to indie rock legends--Superchunk in '89, Dinosaur Jr in '87, The Replacements in '84--while sounding totally new, and totally their own.

    Press Quotes

(Broken Gold) reach back to the more melodic side of their record collections. The title track recalls the Replacements or Hüsker Dü, equal parts rousing and reflective.

         —Art Levy, KUTX

Merging elements of punk, post-hardcore, and college rock, the title track is impossibly catchy (and deceptively morbid) and proudly carries on the tradition of fuzzed-out, feedback-fueled acts like Dinosaur Jr. and Sugar.

         —Jonah Bayer, Noisey/Vice

Broken Gold finds Riverboat Gamblers guitarist Ian MacDougall going widescreen, jangly, and pop-oriented without losing rock & roll muscle.

         —Tim Stegall, Austin Chronicle
