Jazz musicians have always set out to execute projects meaningful to them and their surroundings, and often, they come out of necessity (or protest). Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie toured the world to dispel Soviet propaganda portraying the US culture as barbaric, John Coltrane recorded "Alabama" in response to a hideous race crime committed against black teens, and Duke Ellington wrote "Black Beauty" as an elegy for dancer/comedienne Florence Mills. Of course at 24 Emmet Cohen can't generate a statement quite as powerful as the great architects of jazz music, but the concept has evolved from a place of deep fervor and seriousness. The live concert in New York City was the inaugural installment in a series of records/interviews called the Masters Legacy Series. The mission is to honor remaining masters of our music and celebrate them not only for what they did 50 or 60 years ago, but for the spirit, humanity, and love they manifest and display currently. This first volume is a record that simultaneously features and pays tribute to grand master drummer Jimmy Cobb. Mr. Cobb helped Miles Davis (Kind of Blue) create his sound throughout the 1950's, toured with Cannonball Adderley and Dinah Washington among others, and pioneered a uniquely personal, and widely imitated swing feel. One of my great collaborators and top NYC bass players Yasushi Nakamura fills out the trio on bass; and Godwin Louis, a young, charismatic titan of the alto saxophone joins the group as a special guest
