Guru Vasist's album Rise 8 Times tells exquisite stories through songs - stories that empathize with personal struggles but ultimately celebrate the enduring human spirit. The music is a unique blend of world/pop/ethnic that transcends boundaries but has distinct roots in Indian Carnatic, Brazilian Choro, and American Jazz, performed by top-notch New York City musicians. The title song 'Rise 8 Times' is an homage to the people of Tohoku, Japan, who survived the 2011 tsunami through their steadfast belief that "You may fall seven times, but rise eight times!" 'Not Black Enough' is the story of a 'coloured' man in Durban, South Africa, who once had the opportunity to live a dignified life, and fight a dignified war...but now, he is not black enough to survive the freedom he won... 'It's a Dream' is set in the war theater of Syria... where world superpowers ("mystical creatures") roam free, living in harmony, sharing eternity, forgiving, striving to heal and redeem... what every Syrian mother wants for her children... 'Morning Fog', adapted from a poem by my daughter Amiti, is how a 11-year old saw my hometown Bengaluru in India, the monks, the cows, and the unruly chaos... which will always be my "home sweet home"... 'Street Carnival' paints the picture of revelers on the streets of Rio de Janeiro who lose themselves as they mashup infectious Samba with cool electronic dance music... in a 21st century street carnaval! These are the kinds of stories Guru Vasist offers you in song. Rise 8 Times celebrates the eclectic world we live in, highlighting our resilience, quest for peace, and the joie de vivre.
