The group Traffic had been scheduled to open but Steve Winwood was ill and cancelled their performance. the band spent the few years before that shaping and reworking the music, along with a lot of rehearsing, and in 1968 they were ready to record. Not long after that they signed a record contract with Columbia Records and Clive Davis. They recorded their first album in L.A. in the summer of 1968. The album was released in the fall. Then shortly afterwards they were invited to perform at the Whiskey A-Go-Go with Three Dog Night for three nights in a row. This was the first time they ever played outside of the bay area. The music critic for the L.A. Times gave the band a very favorable review in which he called band leader, David LaFlamme, the Jimi Hendrix of the violin, probably because he used a wah-wah peddle on his electric, solid body, five string violin. Hendrix was staying at the Beverly Hills Hotel and saw the review. He came by the club to check out the band, came back stage after the show and shared how much he enjoyed the performance. After that, It's A Beautiful Day began touring all over the world. And they're still going today with tours of Europe every year.
