According to Jack White, the music world was very nearly denied his talents when as a youngster he was accepted at a seminary in Wisconsin. In a 2005 interview with Mike Wallace, White revealed that he was going to become a priest, but that at the "last second" he changed his mind. "I had just gotten a new amplifier in my bedroom," White told the interviewer, "and I didn't think I was allowed to take it with me". White began listening intently to music, mainly blues, in his early teens and he soon developed a passion for amongst others Son House, Robert Johnson and Blind Willie McTell, all of whom became prominent influences on his music and that of the White Stripes. But Jack's influences stretch far wider than just the music of the devil, and this collection provides a far reaching selection of the compelling forces who informed his own sound. In addition to the blues giants mentioned comes country from Loretta Lynn, Hank Williams and Patti Page, early punk from MC5 and The Stooges, Rock 'N' Roll from Wanda Jackson and Gene Vincent, and Surf guitar music from Dick Dale, all artists whom Jack has spoken highly of and who have been so important in his development. Featuring 25 cuts in all, this CD will prove both a delightful listening experience and an educational one as it shows how one of the 21st centuries earliest musical icons has, like so many of those from whom he has learnt, has taken the music of the past and forged from it an exciting step into the future.
