Eighteen years have passed since the untimely death of Jo Ann Kelly. Manhaton feels this is the right time to re-release one of Jo Ann's best acoustic albums. Recorded over 30 years ago for Red Rag Records, 'DO IT' has never been available on CD before, only vinyl, now a collector's item. This album has been wonderfully re-mastered by Denis Blackham, with some added some tracks from Jo Ann's fine acoustic album 'Open'. Jo Ann was probably one of the best female blues singers Britain has produced and was also one the very few artists from these shores to make a major impression in the USA. Her set at the 1969 Memphis Blues Festival was a triumph. Blues artists such as Mississippi Fred McDowell & Rufus Thomas were effusive in their praise, The New York Times described her ability to "get beneath the surface of this music" as "startling". Shortly after this both Johnny Winter and Canned Heat asked Jo Ann to join their bands, which Jo Ann declined, preferring to pursue her own individual path. 'DO IT' was entirely recorded in one studio, over a discrete period, using the same group of musicians and playing material that is truly representative of the way Jo Ann was working in live performances at that time. Although steeped in the blues, Jo Ann's huge, distinctive voice, was equally at home with folk or gospel music, her own songs or those of contemporary songwriters. On this album, listen to and enjoy Jo Ann singing an old traditional song such as 'Boll Weevil', then moving quickly on to Jesse Winchester's song 'DO IT', before switching back to a Memphis Minnie track from the 30's. Her exciting and original approach to her music makes this album sound as fresh today as it did several decades ago - true testament to her talent.
