From the beginning, Clarke's films completely fascinated us -- twenty years after her death, they remain brilliant, challenging, and fresh. When the world finally catches up to Clarke, she will be ranked near the top of that cinematic canon that currently includes too few women -- especially courageous women who cared little about the conventions of their time. With Project Shirley: The Magic Box, we were able to bring together eight hours of absolute fabulousness. The collection includes an Oscar®-winning documentary (Robert Frost), a lost children's film (Christopher and Me), D.A. Pennebaker and Clarke's incredible Brussels Loops, the complete catalog of her short films (dance, experimental, industrial and narrative), and dozens of unknown and/or unfinished projects. Because these short masterpieces -- along with Clarke's astonishing feature films--were previously unavailable, her film career has not received the critical and public acclaim it deserves. Now, as audiences thrill to the discoveries in Project Shirley: The Magic Box, they can experience the full range and sweep of this filmmaker's dazzling creativity. Over these last eight years we have amassed a trove of Clarke's materials that would thrill any historian or cinephile. One-of-a-kind 16mm prints that have not seen the light of day since the 1950s, prints of films that never screened, personal letters, diaries, business papers, notebooks, screenplays, doodles, contracts, the family photo albums and dozens of other items have made our hands tremble with excitement. Even after all these years, there was so much great material to review that we were adding and restoring to the very last second. We even raced with our own deadline for this release so we could restore one more film, one more time -- In Paris Parks, off of the 1954 original A/B rolls, thanks to the Anthology Film Archives.
