Noah Haidu's 3rd CD features a high-energy approach to jazz: exciting rhythms, inspired performances, played by the brightest stars on the scene: the prolific saxophone team of Sharel Cassity & Jon Irabagon; expressive trumpet work of Jeremy Pelt; Drummers John Davis and Mark Ferber; bassists Peter Brendler and Ariel de la Portilla. All support Haidu's vision with skill and fire. The quintet reunites Haidu with Pelt, Irabagon and drummer Davis. All appeared on Haidu's debut recording Slipstrea. Recent collaborators Cassity, Ferber, Brendler are expert interpreters of this music. The pulsing anthem Momentum showcases Cassity and Haidu's fiery soloing. "They Who??" features Haidu and Pelt on a melodic groove. The Subversive brings daring solos from Haidu, Irabagon, and Ferber. Sparks fly on Juicy, featureing saxophonists and the pianist. Infinite Distances is the name of a suite of compositions inspired by Noah's reflections on events in his life: marriage, parenthood, the inevitable passing of friends & family members. The title comes from the writings of poet/philosopher Rainer Maria Rilke whom Haidu first encountered in a conversation with Branford Marsalis about piano-hero Kenny Kirkland. The result is a powerful six-part suite linking the stirring waltz Hanaya (written for Haidu's wife after her father passed away) to the contrapuntal dialogues of Infinite Distances: the shape-changing transformations of Guardians of Solitude to the haunting melody of Can We Talk? All are tied together with truly inspired improvisations. Irabagon's searching tenor is the only solo on the edgy This Great Darkness, while Ferber's powerhouse drumming is front and center on Against the Sky. Haidu's haunting yet beautiful arrangement of Joe Henderson's Serenity ends the set, a mood piece which stays with you long after its final rhythms dissolve into silence. Noah Haidu's latest CD is without question the most powerful statement yet by a brilliant young pianist and composer.
