Spyro Gyra started out their career with the rhythms of the world. From the samba rhythms and Caribbean feel of their early hits in the 1970's to the latest album, these musicians have made a point to embrace the music of the places they have visited. Their latest release, A Foreign Affair (AMH 6611-2), finds them returning to Buffalo NY based Amherst Records, the label who launched their enduring international career, a career that has taken them to the far reaches of the globe. Their immersion in the music of the world is not the dabbling of a dilettante. They live much of their lives in "foreign" cultures. For instance, in an admittedly atypical month in recent years, they played shows in New Jersey and Rochester but then left the U.S. to perform in Turkey, Germany, Netherlands, Israel, India, Martinique and South Africa. That's in one month. That's kind of what this new album would sound like if you only added in a few more places. This album is the story of a love affair with the music of the world. The songs take you through the Caribbean with "Antigua" and "Caribe" to points farther south with "Chileno Boys" down to Brazil for "Canção de Ninar" and "Samba For Two" and then back north to Trinidad for the steel pan party song, "Sweet Ole Thang." Then it's time to visit the other side of the globe for "Khuda" which might be the first song with Hindi lyrics to come from an American group. While we're in Asia, we can visit "Shinjuku," a famous nightlife area of Tokyo. Our trip then takes us back via South Africa with "Dancing On Table Mountain" named after the Cape Town landmark. We land back where we started, in New York, represented here by "Falling Walls" and "Last Call," sung by Grammy® winning blues vocalist Keb' Mo'. All in all, we hope that you enjoy this brief tour of the world from Spyro Gyra for your listening enjoyment.
