Continuing Chrome Dreams' "Best Jazz Tunes" series, this latest double CD focuses on the finest jazz compositions that first came out in 1961. In a year that saw the release of some of the 1960s best Jazz albums, from which the tracks on this compilation are taken, finding 25 outstanding cuts to represent the year in Jazz was easy in terms of the amount of such quality material available, but difficult in deciding what should make the final choice. But with esteemed Jazz expert Charles Waring on hand once again to create the ultimate shortlist and write the accompanying notes, we believe this package really does do "what it says on the tin". John Coltrane appears again with two cuts representing the incredible four new albums he released during '61, and other album highlights of the year included those from Miles Davis (My Prince Will Come), Ornette Coleman (Ornette), Dave Brubeck (Time Further Out), Max Roach (Percussion Bitter Sweet), Hank Mobley (Workout), Gil Evans (Out Of The Cool) and numerous others, all represented on this magnificent collection. Illustrating a period when Jazz music was at its most exciting and experimental, with Latin and African rhythms entering the genre and with a number of new artists pushing the boundaries as hard as the more established musicians, this compilation is must have item for just about everyone with even the humblest appreciation of the style.
