More European in presentation and overall sound, Angerot's midwest roots provide more heft in the backbone of their riffs than their Eastern counterparts, and while the band continue to flirt with more black metal aesthetics, the foundation is certainly grounded in death metal. One thing that continues to remain a constant in the band's sound is the ever-present grinding cacophony of the HM-2. The band even evolved in this manner beginning on their last album The Divine Apostate, when they partnered with Harvey Audio to create their own HM-2 influenced pedal called the Chainsaw. While their love of Swedish Death Metal may never be completely out of their system, Angerot do an excellent job at maintaining their own identity rather than ever falling into any 'clone' conversation. And no Angerot album would be complete without a gaggle of guests. This time around they've enlisted Andy LaRoque, Sammy 'Satan' Duet, Jack Owen, Steve Tucker, Simon Olsen, David Gutierrez Rojas, and Sebastian Bracht. All provide notable performances and truly add color and depth to the album that might of not otherwise been present without. Angerot seem to be experts at strategically picking just the right guest for the part rather than some 'metal by numbers' approach. Like all of their albums, The Profound Recreant's focus is on the songs and the full composition of work rather than copy and paste riffs and singles. Angerot create an experience with their albums when listening, as I believe one should, front to back, and The Profound Recreant might just be their most profound statement yet.
