Benny Goodman could sell excitement from the moment he came on and put the reed in his mouth. He just never stopped swinging and even in semi-retirement he played about 70 engagements a year, some of them 'classical', until his death in 1986. For this album we were fortunate enough to find decent copies of almost all the great numbers we wanted to include, mostly big band favourites but with a couple of trios to show what he did in such a context. Sound quality unavoidably varies since the recordings were made at different times and places. Using modern knobs and levers and things, our engineers have effected considerable improvements, though not a lot could be done with this recording of the signature tune (which I just had to include) 'Let's Dance'. But I trust you will agree that every single number is well worth repeated playing. Goodman's is music to be happy by.
