On June 25, 1961, the Bill Evans Trio recorded one of their performances at the celebrated Village Vanguard jazz club in New York. At thattime, the trio consisted of Evans, Scott LaFaro on bass, and Paul Motian on drums. This formation is considered the best of the pianist'strios, and one of the best trios in jazz history. A highly praised virtuoso on his instrument, LaFaro would die in a car accident soon after onJuly 6, 1961, at the tender age of 25. Most of the pieces recorded at the Vanguard were issued on two highly successful albums: Sunday atthe Village Vanguard, and the one presented here, Waltz for Debby ( RLP9399). Ten tracks from Evans' debut album as a trio, NewJazz Conceptions ( Records RLP12-223), including unaccompanied piano performances of two songs from our primary album, "MyRomance" and the title tune, have been added as a bonus. ****amg "Here Motian's brushwork is delicate, fl ighty and elegant, and LaFaro controls the dynamic of the tune with his light as afeather pizzicato work and makes Evans' deeply emotional statements swing effortlessly. Of the many recordings Evansissued, the two Vanguard dates and Explorations are the ultimate expressions of his legendary trio." (Thom Jurek)Penguin Guide to Jazz:"All the Vanguard music is informed by an extra sense of discovery, as if the musicians were suddenly aware ofwhat they were on to and were celebrating the achievement. This is music which continues to provoke marvel andendless study." (Richard Cook & Brian Morton)
