John Howard Griffin's Black Like Me began in 1961 as an ambitious reporter's chronicle of his blackface odyssey of disguise through the last gasps of the Jim Crow south. The articles were compiled into a book that impacted the nation's conscience and became required reading for decades in schools across America. In 1964, just as Washington was passing the Civil Rights Act, some Hollywood activists interpreted the book for the screen with James Whitmore as Griffin, who medically altered his pigment and, with the help of a sunlamp, reinvented himself as an itinerant black writer navigating his way through Mississippi and Alabama. Along the way he experienced firsthand both crushing racism and the incredible life force of the Afro-American communities. Guest stars include Roscoe Lee Browne, Clifton James, Will Geer and the media gadfly Heywood Hale Broun in a rare turn in front of the cameras. Thanks to a full restoration from the original negative, this is the first time Black Like Me has been released on DVD. Included in this exclusive package is a bonus disc containing Uncommon Vision, the biographical documentary of Griffin himself whose life was remarkable even without Black Like Me.
