Andreas Buchwald, guitarist, songwriter and musical head of the post-punk and dark wave band REMAIN IN SILENCE, has presented his first solo work with ESCAPE FROM WHAT LIFE IS. ESCAPE FROM WHAT LIFE IS is a multifaceted, darkly shimmering album of extraordinary intensity and almost visual power. Cinematic Post-Wave - that's the best way to describe this style of music. The opener WHAT COLOR HAS YOUR PAIN? refers musically to electronic New Wave traditions and sets the course for a journey through the twilight. The hypnotic RITUALS with its rhythms reminiscent of voodoo sounds pulls the listener further into the dark depths of the album, which comes up with surprising and dramatically staged twists. The menacing calm of DARK CLOUDS leads to an ethno-percussive climax. While the minimally electronic beginning NIGHTBIRD builds up a tension that finally discharges in an orchestral cathartic way. The instrumental CORRIDOR leads to the oppressive ARTIFACTS. A ghostly melody hovers over a heart-pounding rhythm, providing the soundtrack to a self-awareness in which all certainties seem to vanish and the abyss seems just a step away, performed by an unlikely guest speaker: British Disco's "Big G" Perrineau -Band eruption. The stoically grooving SLOW POISON develops from the booming rhythm of rusty machines. Restrained piano sounds in the sparsely instrumented NEVERLAND accompany the melancholy vocal melody, which sticks in your head. The melancholic yet propulsive title track ESCAPE FROM WHAT LIFE IS, with its wistful banjo hookline, completes the cycle in the spirit of the album in all its magic and beauty. The album's nine tracks are stations on a journey through the twilight, uncertain whether it will turn into day or night. They reflect a phase of decisive personal experience in Buchwald's life. They deal with transience, loss, departure and the power of the imagination.
