This masterpiece was Bacharach's second A&M album, and like its predecessor, features outstanding songwriting. One of the highlights of the record is the great production between Bacharach and Phil Ramone,as well as the instrumental performances. Even songs that aren't immediately pleasing to the ear grow on the listener: "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," and "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?" are great tunes that solidify Bacharach as a master of quirk. Without a doubt, Bacharach's charm is his skill in dealing with abstracts. The title track, sung and played by Bacharach himself, is considered one of the most popular compositions of the David/Bacharach team. It was first a hit for Jerry Butler in 1962 and later for the Walker Brothers when it became a #1 hit in the UK pop charts in 1965. Bacharach's rendition is powerful, and full of depth and range. This masterpiece, as well as the albums HitMaker! (1965) and Reach Out (1968) - which were both recently reissued by Elemental Music- places Burt Bacharach as one of the greatest living composers of our time, along with Ennio Morricone, John Williams or Lalo Schifrin.
