"The records Chuck Berry made in the Fifties stand out as rock & roll guitar playing to the max. Especially when you add it to the songwriting and the singing and everything else. There's your package." Keith Richards ."This quintessential release includes Chuck's third LP, Berry Is on Top, originally released in July 1957 by Chess Records and long unavailable on vinyl. The album features 12 sensational numbers and was akin to a greatest hits sampler. The song lineup is exemplary, cobbling together classics like "Maybellene" and "Roll Over Beethoven" along with "Almost Grown," "Carol," "Sweet Little Rock and Roller," "Anthony Boy," "Johnny B. Goode," "Little Queenie," "Jo Jo Gunne," "Around and Around," and "Hey Pedro." The only new song on this album is Chuck's own "Blues for Hawaiians." In the words of music journalist Cub Koda: "While Berry Is on Top may be merely a collection of singles and album ballast (as were most rock & roll LPs of the 1950s and early '60s), it ends up being the most perfectly realized of Chuck Berry's career." In addition to this sensational LP, this WaxTime collector's edition contains 2 bonus tracks from the same period - "The Downbound Train" and the up-tempo "Run Rudolph Run" - a 12-bar blues in the classic Berry vein. This material represents the cream of the crop from Berry's hitmaking stretch for the Chess label during his most inspired years. All of these original gems are simple two-and-a-half-minute songs that convey all of the sheer power and emotion of rock & roll.
