Over the decades, David Sampson (b. 1951, Charlottesville, Virginia) has emerged as a leading composer uniquely acclaimed for the integrity of his music. His works have been described as intensely honest and human, taking his audiences through rich experiences filled with depth and emotion. Among Sampson's chamber music works are Dectet (Chicago Chamber Musicians), Chesapeake, Morning Music, Distant Voices (American Brass Quintet), Breathing Lessons (Chamber Music America/Amherst Saxophone Quintet), What The Living Do (Gail Williams and friends), Memories To Keep Awhile (David Elton and friends), and Short Stories (Chamber Music America/Pew Charitable Trust/Aspen Wind Quintet. His orchestral and wind ensemble works include The War Prayer (soloists, chorus and orchestra), Monument (orchestra), Turns (violoncello and orchestra), Jersey Rain (solo baritone, chorus and orchestra), Simple Lives (orchestra), Triptych (trumpet and orchestra), Moving Parts (wind ensemble), and Double Back (solo trumpet, trombone and wind ensemble). These works have been commissioned and performed by orchestras and wind ensembles including the National Symphony, New Jersey Symphony, North Texas Wind Ensemble, Memphis Symphony, Akron Symphony, U.S Army Field Band, Aspen Music Festival, American Composers Orchestra, National Endowment for the Arts, Bergen Foundation, New Jersey Council on the Arts, Dodge Foundation and Barlow Endowment, among others. This recording features some of the finest brass players in the world including the American Brass Quintet as a group and as soloists, as well as Philadelphia Brass.
