DEEP IN VOGUE celebrates the colorful, queer, emotional and political stories of Northern Vogue and its people. Synonymous with the black, gay ballrooms of 1980s New York this documentary asks why we need Vogue in Manchester now more than ever. Over the course of a year, film makers Dennis Keighron-Foster and Amy Watson charted the build up to the Manchester ICONS Vogue Ball. Exploring themes from the internal politics of Vogue to its external politics like disenfranchisement of black youth, LGBT issues, a shrinking welfare state, a dearth of art spaces and modes of expression, a reductive and commercialized gay scene and a lack of safe spaces for the truly different. DEEP IN VOGUE is about people coming to love and accept themselves, finding a new family through vogue. The film explores the history of vogue and ballroom, in which Black and Latinx gay men and trans people sought an aspirational artistic outlet in the 1980s, in much the same way that gay, queer, trans and QTIPOC people seek a safe space today.

Sales Points

  • Voguing is a stylized dance form that originated in the late 1980s that harks back to the Harlem ballrooms of the 1960s. Interestingly, it has enjoyed renewed popularity in the north of England, spawning a movement known as Northern Vogue.
  • “Deep in Vogue” celebrates the colorful, queer, emotional and political stories of Northern Vogue and its people.
  • Features the music of Crazy P and CVNT Traxx.
  • The cast includes Joshua Hubbard, Lenai Khirey and Asttina Mandella.
  • The film premiered at the 2019 BFI Flare Film Festival in London, won the 2019 Audience Award at the GAZE International LGBT Film Festival, and had its East Coast premiere at New York City’s NewFest 2019 OutCinema.
  • Much like ‘The Miseducation of Cameron Post,’ and ‘Divine Divas,’ this film shines the light on individuals finding acceptance, love and a safe space of expression after years of feeling alienated.

Press Quotes

Anyone who has ever felt themselves to be on the "outside" of some "inside" group will find a lot to commiserate with in Deep in Vogue, and this documentary should certainly appeal to anyone in the LGBT+ communities, especially if they have a fondness for the club dance scene. What's especially interesting about Deep in Vogue is its northern UK sensibility. Perhaps some music fans know of a genre called "northern soul", and while it's not exactly the same, there is certainly northern soul on display in abundance throughout this fascinating and even provocative documentary. Technical merits are generally solid, and Deep in Vogue comes Recommended.
