Another Kung Fu vehicle from the infamous Shaw Brothers Studio, Disciples of Shaolin AKA Hong quan xiao zi, delivers a typically power-packed Hong Kong tale of enemy gangs and super cool fight scenes. When shaolin disciple Kuan Fung Yi (Sheng Fu) takes a job at a textile factory he soon becomes embroiled in a bitter and violent clash with the rival Manchu clan who run a neighbouring mill. As well delivering some impressive martial arts set pieces, Disciples of Shaolin also provides a political punch, underlining the abuse of workers and the corruption of cruel bosses. Fast, fierce and thought provoking, this is a must for collectors of extreme Asian cinema.

Press Quotes

'Disciples of Shaolin' is a beautifully crafted masterpiece that requires a global audience.

     —ANDREW SAROCH, FarEastFilms.com

That said, as for the film’s superbly staged fight scenes, yes, of course Fu Sheng is excellent in these scenes as it is truly on par with the best of his work.

     —Exclusive Magazine

Sheng’s fight scenes are impressive including one where he takes on a pack of henchmen with a sword dangling from his gut.

     —Joe Corey, Inside Pulse

In addition to the beautiful transfer of the film from the original 35mm negative, this release offers up bonus content including commentary, interviews, and more as well as brand new artwork for the slipcase, double-sided foldout poster and booklet.

     —Bobby Blakey, Hollywood Matrimony

One only needs to look at the two sepia-colored scenes to see just how gorgeous this transfer is.

     —A.W. Kautzer, The Movie Isle

The HD master of the film looked really good, and I have nothing negative to say about this release. A top-notch release.

—David J. Moore, The Action Elite

Disciples of Shaolin gets an excellent release from 88 Films that comes with a solid audio/video presentation and a wealth of insightful extras, highly recommended.

     —Michael Den Boer, 10K Bullets

88 Films’ Limited Edition Blu-ray of Disciples of Shaolin boasts both English and Mandarin language tracks to accompany the remastered image sourced from the original 35mm elements, and the first-run packaging boasts a slipcase, booklet, and mini poster!

     —Jef Burnham, Film Monthly

It dawdles a bit early on, but the third act absolutely rips; the action beats are breathlessly executed, and Chang Cheh’s direction is top-notch.

     —Jason Bailey, The Playlist

The martial arts action is fast, furious and often. Fans of the genre will not be disappointed.

     —Bob Bloom, Reel Bob

The martial arts action is fast, furious and often. Fans of the genre will not be disappointed.

     —Bob Bloom, The Film Yap

Chen Yung-Yu’s score follows the chic & funky Asian template heard from most of the era’s Shaw kung-fu movies, but puts some interesting musical twists on the formula – everything from early ‘70s American pop to Tchaikovsky and the aforementioned Ennio Morricone spaghetti western scores.

     —Gabe Powers, Genre Grinder

This new remastered transfer is truly something remarkable. It looks and sounds gorgeous on Blu-ray. Fans of 70s Kung Fu Cinema are going to be so impressed with this transfer words can not do it justice.

     —Jason Lockard, Classic Cinema Magazine

Beyond the film itself, you’ve got this expansive package brought to you by 88 Films, in one of their very first releases here in the United States. They’re pulling out all the stops with original artwork, multiple commentary tracks, and expansive liner notes.

     —Ed Travis, Cinapse

Grade: film and extras 4 stars ("excellent")

     —Village Soup

They’ve given it a new HD master which looks terrific.

     —Mat Brewster, Cinema Sentries

That probably irrelevant quandary aside, this film is a great showcase for the always hugely enjoyable Fu Sheng, and this release shares some of the generally excellent technical merits and appealing supplements of some of the films featured in the Arrow Video set. Recommended.

     —Jeffrey Kauffman, Blu-ray.com

It’s a rewarding journey if you can keep up but be prepared to either commit yourself wholeheartedly to following along or simply content yourself to enjoying the action, regardless of if you know who’s fighting who or why.

     —Jef Burnham, Film Monthly

With the current collector trend leading to easy access and unprecedented quality and supplements, fans can now hold the films in their hands, study the talent involved, and watch them over and over, all for just a little bit more than the price of a single movie ticket.

     —Cereal At Midnight

o sum it all up: If you love a good underdog gone astray yarn where people get their asses beat, then Disciples of Shaolin has your amazingly specific cinema tastes covered… but the film is also a pretty solid entry in the Shaw Bros. catalog, and is a great deal of fun thanks to the performance of Alexander Fu Sheng.

     —DanXIII, Horror Fuel

It’s gorgeous, plus wholly natural, if with a little boost from modern scanning.

     —Matt Paprocki, Doblu

With the current collector trend leading to easy access and unprecedented quality and supplements, fans can now hold the films in their hands, study the talent involved, and watch them over and over, all for just a little bit more than the price of a single movie ticket.

     —Cereal At Midnight

Disciples of Shaolin (1975) gets a terrific assortment of disc and packaging extras and a stellar A/V presentation - we are truly living in a Golden age for cult cinema fans, and kung fu cinema fans in particular, right now at this very moment.

     —Ken, MC Bastard's Mausoleum

eleased stateside as "Invincible One", Disciples Of Shaolin reappeared under its better-known title when Image Entertainment put out several of Celestial Pictures' Shaw Brothers remasters in 2009. Celestial Pictures' more recent HD remaster first turned up on Blu-ray in 2013 in Germany with English subtitles but lossy audio – France's Wild Side Video Blu-ray was apparently cancelled – but 88 Films' 1080p24 MPEG-4 AVC 2.35:1 widescreen Blu-ray looks virtually spotless with nicely saturated colors and good detail in facial features, hair, clothing, Shaw's studio sets and props, and the Taiwanese location exteriors.
