Perseverance Records is proud to release not one but two wonderful scores by the respected composer, pianist and poet Donald Rubinstein. The first part of our double feature is the score to the 1977 George Romero cult classic, Martin. Martin starred Romero collaborator, John Amplas as the title character who believed he was a vampire. Considered by many to be one of Romero's more complex films, it was a departure from the director's previous horror films. In this movie he uses psychology, atmosphere, suspense and solid character development to show the title character's slow, disturbing descent into Martin was not a huge box office success but it did find new life (as well as a whole new audience) during the VHS boom of the late 1980s/early 1990s. Since then, Martin has been a solid catalog seller on all the video formats since. The second part of our double header is Pollock. The movie stars Ed Harris and Marcia Gay Harden and was released in 2000. Directed by Harris, Pollock was based on Steven Naifeh's biography on painter Jackson Pollock. Donald Rubinstein was commissioned to write the score but was replaced by Jeff Beal whose score is heard in the film.

Press Quotes

Mojo Votes Martin 'One of the top 100 coolest soundtracks of all time.' George Romero's deeply disturbing portrait of a modern day 'vampire' comes with an equally chilling score - haunting, minimalist jazz penned and performed by pianist-poet Donald Rubinstein. Elevates the horror score into high art.

     —Lois Wilson, Mojo

What really knocked me out is the music for Martin, a showcase for Rubinstein's jazz chops. [...]

     —Gary Giddins, jazz critic, author

A brilliant, jazz-oriented score by composer Donald Rubinstein.

     —Nightstick

Donald Rubinstein providing one of his finest, eeriest music scores.

     —Mondo Digital

Martin's overall mood is greatly enhanced by somber, evocative chamber music.

—Paul A. Gagne, The Films of George A. Romero

The music was composed and played by pianist Donald Rubinstein...minimal, sad, lovely, melancholy and touching...haunting in just the right spots...perfect for a moody flick.

—Dean Roberts, NY Downtown Music Gallery

Perhaps the most unusual film jazz in the bunch is Donald Rubinstein's score.

—Daniel Schweiger, Venice Magazine ‘On The Score’

he other major plus here is Donald Rubinstein's moody jazz score. It's superb; perfectly and tastefully underscoring the film.

     —Thomas C. Brown, Media Unleashed
