Earl Hines was one of the most important and influential pianists in the history of 20th century jazz, his career embracing work spread across many stylistic expressions of the genre, from swing to post-war modern jazz. In the 1950s, he was tempted to the West Coast to play a short season at Doc Dougherty's Club Hangover in San Francisco, finding himself leading a band in the hotbed of the Dixieland revival. He took it in his stride, and enjoyed it so much he stayed for a couple of years, playing a succession of seasons, his skill and breadth of experience bringing an exuberant and uninhibited approach to the music. Radio station KCBS in San Francisco broadcast a regular 'live' Friday night half-hour show from the Club, and this 2-CD set, gleaned from our access to the largely unreleased collection called the Ackerman Tapes, held in the archives of Stanford University, comprises the four broadcasts from Earl Hines' first season at Club Hangover, with a band that includes the great saxophonist Morris Lane, playing a band with a distinct swing/R&B flavour rather than the venue's more usual Dixieland fare.. Apart from a few tracks released by Storyville, these are recordings which have never previously been available, and the complete broadcasts have certainly never been released in this form.
