Thelin was one of the strongest voices on the trombone to emerge from Sweden in the 60s. His knowledge of every style of jazz helped him to develop an identity for his own groups and gave him the opportunity of playing with illustrious visitors such as George Russell. Thelin moved to Austria where he taught for five years, while still jointly leading a group with Joachim Kühn; they both appeared on Don Cherry's album "Eternal Rhythm". On his return to Sweden Thelin continued to lead his own groups and gained life-long government support for his merits as a leading artist. Sadly, he died in his early 50s in 1990. Thelin will be remembered as one of the most powerful trombonists in modal and free music to come from Europe.
