Ella Fitzgerald is recognised as one of the few jazz singers who could have truly claimed to have become a legend in her lifetime, an artist who remained at the top of her profession for almost fifty years and since her death in June 1996, is revered by music fans all around the world. Ella was born in Newport News, Virginia U.S.A. in April 1918 and had her big professional break in 1934 when she took part in a talent show at the famous Harlem Opera House in New York City. She beat the competition and her prize was a singing contract with Chick Webb's famous orchestra. The musical relationship between the two worked so well that Ella continued working with Webb, both on record and doing live shows, until his premature death in 1939 (ironically the same year that Ella also recorded her first million-selling record 'A-Tisket, A-Tasket' with Webb and his orchestra). This collection features forty of her greatest tracks including 'A-Tisket, A-Tasket', Cole Porter's 'My Heart Belongs To Daddy', 'Little White Lies', 'Taking A Chance On Love', 'Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man (from Showboat), 'I Want To Be Happy', 'It's Only A Paper Moon' and 'Darktown Strutters Ball'. Every song featured here is a genuine classic and underlines Ella Fitzgerald's impeccable taste in choosing the best material around, while the recordings underline why she remained at the top of her chosen profession for so many decades.
