As a performer, Emily Skala has been described by critics as imaginative and extraordinarily talented, possessing a beautiful, powerful sound, superb intonation, a lyrical eloquence of phrase, effortless purity and fullness of tone in a class by itself, as well as having a brilliant technique and a virtuoso's confidence; a genuine charmer with unimpeachable musical taste. THEME and VARIATIONS ON TROCKNE BLUMEN, D.802 by Schubert is one of the most important works flutists possess in what is universally considered to be their standard repertoire.

TRACK LISTING:
1.Sonata Opus 120, No. 2 in E-flat Major
2. Allegro amabile Appassionato, ma non troppo Allegro
3. Andante con moto
4. Theme and Variations on Trockne Blumen from Die Schone Mullerin
5. Introduction Theme
6. Variation 1 Variation 2 Variation 3 Variation 4 Variation 5 Variation 6 Variation 7
7. Sonata Op. 120, No. 1 in f minor
8. Allegro appassionato Andante un poco Adagio Allegro grazioso Vivace

Hanoch Tel-Oven has transcribed them for flute. Since the flute does not have a big a range as the viola or the clarinet, some of the melodic lines must be compressed by shifting the octave in the flute part. Skala weaves these awkward shifts into the texture seamlessly. Her soft playing is exquisite. She has a mature concept of the repertoire and of rubato. - Johnson, ARG - The Sun, Baltimore, MD
