FATCAT succeed in pushing overboard the well-rehearsed mechanisms of the past decade, dispensing with all those business appointments between, pop, jazz, funk, soul and R&B elements - they simply get out there and play!
By the way, the album title "More Sugar", which at first glance might seem a bit questionable from a nutritional standpoint, has a variety of interpretations. Symbolically it means that a spoonful of sugar can sweeten up your life. An extra pinch of sugar certainly can't hurt in dreary times - so the band's credo. But sugar is energy as well and this, in turn, translates into movement. The album title again represents an "in the moment" snapshot, alluding to the immediate situation in which and for which the record was made. "If you're feeling a little sluggish, you might say, "hey, I need a bit more sugar" to get you back into the groove" rejoices Kenny Joyner, with an infectious laugh illustrating his point. Although there's no danger of over-sweetness here, this extra dose of energy certainly makes every song on "More Sugar" come on like a high-speed sunrise.
FATCAT is a band that doesn't need to reinvent itself on "More Sugar" to create a big bang exclamation point. FATCAT is happening here, FATCAT is happening now! That's what every beat, every note and every syllable of this album tells us. Their music is an exuberant daily companion to self-discovery and reinvention, celebrating, by virtue of its grooves and without the merest whisper of a therapeutic approach, the dynamism of life itself.
