The end of the second millennium was a troubling, albeit creative, time for Foo Fighters. Following Pat Smears' departure in early 1997, his replacement, Dave Grohl's old Scream bandmate, Franz Stahl, joined, but after it emerged he could not form a successful writing partnership with Grohl, Stahl was out again by '98. Next up, bass player Nate Mendel announced his resignation, but soon re-joined. The band's album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose, recorded in Dave Grohl's home studio in Virginia, was released world-wide on November 2nd 1999, and was seen as something of a departure from earlier work, presenting a softer, more song-derived collection; the record spawned a host of hit singles, including 'Learn to Fly', the Foos' first to reach No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was also their last for Capitol; they joined RCA shortly thereafter. Beginning in late 1999, Foo Fighters' There Is Nothing Left To Lose Tour ran throughout 2000 and into 2001, during which the group took in four continents. By late January 2000 they were in Australia, where they headlined the Big Day Out Festival in Sydney on 26th of the month. Playing a quite startling set, this CD features the full broadcast recording of their performance at this now world famous festival.
