The dramaturgical course of today's program leads deep into the Austrian tradition, far back to a popular old pilgrimage song, recorded by Joseph Haydn, varied by Johannes Brahms. But why this in a duet with Joe Zawinul, the star of the international rock jazz scene? Because he, like me, is deeply rooted in the original Austrian tradition, a Viennese arch-musician, as he says in the book, who in his own way did and still does something very similar to my cause: namely, to open himself to international music, but not to himself at her mercy, but to dominate her, while never forgetting what he owes to his own musical roots. That's why he's the only right partner for me with Haydn and Brahms. Consequently, the program closes with another set of variations, namely "Variations for Two Pianos and Band", composed in 1966, premiered in Berlin in the same year, also with Joe Zawinul as a partner. A waltz theme with a slightly Viennese character is modified in mostly jazzy improvised variations ("Choruses") in different tempi and time signatures. Building spiritual bridges to Master Brahms and even further back should not be difficult for the practiced listener. But such a mind game is by no means necessary to enjoy the piece. Everyone can take it how they want: Have fun!
