Arranger, Composer, Producer, Educator, Historian Founder & Music Director, Williamsburg Music Center Gerry Eastman has emerged as a prominent musician on the New York scene, with work as a performer, composer, producer, arranger, conductor, and band leader to his credit. An accomplished bassist, it is his recent work on the guitar, however, that has brought him the greatest recognition. His fluid style, effortlessly blending diverse jazz modes from Delta blues to avant-garde jazz, appeals to audiences of all ages and musical persuasions. A precocious talent and initially self-taught, Eastman became the rage of the Upstate New York jazz circuit at age seventeen. His talent resulted in an earlystint as an arranger with Motown Records. He later went on to study music composition, performance, and theory at Ithaca College and Cornell University, cementing his native talent with an academic foundation. Eastman moved to New York City in 1979, and soon began to distinguish himself on the guitar and acoustical bass at the major downtown jazz clubs and music festivals. His tours have included the Kool Jazz Festival, the Montreaux and JVC Festivals in the U.S. and Japan, and a number of appearances with the Count Basie Orchestra, where he eventually replaced the legendary Freddie Green. He has also worked with Frank Foster, Thad Jones, Stanley Turrentine, Etta Jones, Houston Pearson, Sarah Vaughn, and Nancy Wilson. Eastman has expressed his range of talent on five self-produced albums and CD's. In 1981, Eastman founded the Williamsburg Music Center to provide a creative music environment for jazz composers and performers, and to foster jazz appreciation among young listeners. The non-profit Brooklyn-based center has become a haven for local performers and jazz audiences. A respected musicologist specializing in jazz and blues history, Eastman has lectured and performed around the world. His lecture-demonstrations have been featured at Columbia University, the Guggenhiem Museum, Pennsylvania State University, Bronx Community College, Clarion University, and the Smithsonian Institution WDC, Buffalo State College, where he served as artist-in-residence. His current lecture titles are: The Use of Blues in Contemporary Compositions and The Roots of Blues and Jazz Guitar.
