Mostly recorded without a piano (Mulligan and Brookmeyer play piano on just three tracks), these sides followed the standard set by Mulligan himself on his classic piano-less quartets with Chet Baker, Art Farmer, and with Brookmeyer, himself (the baritone saxophonist and trombonist's first quartet attempts date from 1954).
