"Marcelo Quevedo and his brother Carlos were split up during childhood. Carlos departed Cuba on a boat with his mother during the 1994 Balseros Crisis to seek a different life, and Marcelo was burdened with staying in Cuba to care for his grandfather who was in poor health.
