Long before George Jones & Tammy Wynette were singing duets about marital life and strife, another husband-wife team were working that territory to perfection. Nevertheless, Hal 'Lone Pine' and Betty Cody are better known today for being the parents of guitar virtuoso, Lenny Breau, than they for their pioneering country records. When Lenny was barely 12 years old, his parents were successful recording artists for RCA Victor and headlined the WWVA Jamboree in Wheeling, West Virginia.
Today, these records are barely remembered. The sessions featured some of the finest pickers Nashville and New York had to offer, including Chet Atkins, Jerry Byrd, George Barnes and Billy Mure. This disc reissues - in many cases for the first time - these all-but-forgotten sides that include some decidedly hot picking in a style light years removed from the commercial product manufactured by Nashville today.
The accompanying book features liner notes by Hank Davis, based on his recent interviews with Betty Cody and some of the original sidemen of the Pine/Cody show. They offer an honest look at the real-life marital strife that fuelled the recording sessions, and also provide insight into the development of young Lenny Breau's talent and the role played by mentors like Chet Atkins. The book is generously illustrated with vintage photographs, many of them previously unpublished.
