Blue is the color of infinity. Circular movements and cycles are basic principles of life. As musical elements, they are associated with movement and rhythmic energy - as repetitive figures, which charge themselves continually with new energy, stimulate each other and finally start to rotate and dance. To awake such primal forces and to make them audible and sensible is one of the objectives of Hans Lüdemann's ROOMS. They are translated into a sensual and physical musical approach. The musicians embody these musical elements and forces, they are continuously charged with their energies and transfer those to the listener in musical processes. The blue is also the blue of jazz, of 'blue notes', of melancholy and pain. It is amplified into a more intense shade of blue through the microtonal discolorations of the 'virtual piano'. Here and there one could also be reminded of an out of tune piano from historic jazz recordings. Circles and colors characterize and pervade the whole album. The group took a long time to record their second album. After the release of the first "Rooms" CD in 2010, a live CD of the trio also became part of the "kunst des trios" CD - box, released in 2011 and awarded with the "ECHO Jazz 2013". But the most important reason certainly is the evolution of the trio that is expressed with this album and that took time - with a completely new program of original compositions. The development manifests itself in several ways: The involvement with larger and more complex forms, new elements of micro tonality and virtual piano sounds and their integration into the trio conception, a stronger projection of each individual voice within the trio as well as a specific band sound that integrates three strong individuals into a unity.

Press Quotes

Hans Lüdemann is so damn expressive with a melody, and yet his music has such a relaxed ambiance to it that it hardly seems like he's even trying. That dichotomy, and the fascinating contrast it puts front and center of every piece, is a big reason his music resonates like mad. The pianist first gained this site's notice with his excellent 2014 release Timbuktu, which earned the #25 slot on that year's Best of 2014. That was with his Trio Ivoire and their piano-balaphon-percussion combo with Aly Keita and Christian Thomé. On his newest release Blaue Kreise, it's a more conventional combo with his ROOMS outfit of bassist Sébastien Boisseau and drummer Dejan Terzic, but the huge expressiveness makes its presence felt with no less force.
