FUNK (fungk) n. Slang. 1. A Funky music. b. The earthy, pulsating quality of this music. 2. A humorous put-on. [Back-formation from Funky] FUNKY (fung'ke) adj. -ier, -iest. Slang. 1. Having an earthy, pulsating quality with an uninhibited mix of Jazz, Rock, Rhythm and Blues, Calypso and Country music, and often with Soul-music overtones: funky music. 2. a. Characterized by self-expression, originality and modishness; trendy and unconventional: funky clothes. b. Outlandishly vulgar or way-out in a humorous or tongue-in-cheek manner; campy.

Funk was born into the composer. He danced to and performed it as a kid and subsequently he wanted to put it into symphonic form. Part of a trilogy which includes SYMPHONY #2-REGGAE and SYMPHONY #3-HEAVY METAL, SYMPHONY #4-FUNK was begun on May 21, 1990 and completed November 20, 1991. It had its world premiere at the Janacek Theater in Brno, The Czech Republic on February 23, 1995. The concert sold out in one week, seven months in advance. So successful was this event, the orchestra went into the studio to do the recording, which was released on New Millennium Records (NMR61596). The work was also requested to be part of the Twentieth Century Music Festival and performed in Dvorak Hall at the Rudolfinum in Prague, on October 21, 1995.

The recording would subsequently become part of the music playlist on President Bill Clinton's Air Force One!

    Press Quotes

This is serious music, and these are major works. There is nothing here that smacks of populist, commercial art. I would place Wayne very high among the ranks of major American symphonists. Highly recommended.

         —Jerry Dubins, Fanfare Magazine 2004

.....'If Haydn could use Austrian folk music in his symphonies, if Schubert could indulge the Landler, Ives create congestions of band marches, hymns, anthems and popular songs, then why shouldn't Hayden Wayne write a vivacious symphony on reggae...

—Scott MacClelland , Coast Weekly 1997

Wayne's Fourth Symphony is essentially a dance symphony for the very late twentieth century, and I can see a youngish Aaron Copland or Leonard Bernstein (ah, were they still around!) writing a work such as this in the 90's. I enjoyed the heck out of it!'

—Stephen Ellis , Fanfare Magazine 1997

The Want List ...and just plain entertaining-Hayden Wayne's Fourth Symphony on New Millennium...

—Stephen Ellis , Fanfare Magazine 1997

Wayne writes well for orchestra, and he knows a certain market. The reggae rhythms (the backbeat eighths on 2 and 4) are varied and not omnipresent. And who knows, maybe someday the genre will have an honored tradition in concert music akin to the tango.

         —Steve Shaffer , 21ST Century Music 2001

Dear Hayden, I really enjoyed your Symphony #4-FUNK. When do we perform it and when do we record it? This is an important work and it is important that we record it as soon as possible. Doesn't have to be me, as long as it gets recorded.

         —Lucas Foss Jan. 10, 1992
