Six foot, three inches and close to 300 pounds (136 kg) in hissalad days, Howlin' Wolf was the primal force of blues musicspun out to its ultimate conclusion. He was an imposingpresence, blessed with a thunderous voice, enormous physicalstrength and a pair of lungs that would not quit. Howlin' Wolfdidn't just startle audiences, he menaced them into submission. But it's not just his voice, which is inimitable (Wolf's voice defiessuperlatives - that "growl" can put across any emotion and hasbeen compared to "the sound of heavy machinery operatingon a gravel road"). This rough-edged, slightly fearsomemusical style is often contrasted with the less crude but stillpowerful presentation of other blues giants. Robert Johnsonmay have possessed more lyrical insight, Muddy Waters moredignity and elegance, and B.B. King certainly more technicalexpertise, but no one could match Wolf for the singular abilityto rock the house down to the foundation while simultaneouslyscaring its patrons out of their wits. This edition contains Howlin' Wolf's outstanding debut albumfor Chess Records, Moanin' in the Moonlight (1959) - oneof the all-time cornerstones of the genre. It features several ofhis early hits ("How Many More Years," "Moanin' at Midnight,""Smokestack Lightnin'," "Forty Four," "Evil," and "I Askedfor Water [She Gave Me Gasoline]"), and is a pretty potentcollection in its own right.
