"Wir sind das Abendland" ("We Are the Occident") is one of those wonderful albums with the kind of beauty that often becomes clear only after many years have gone by. As the ISLO MOB duo - made up of writer and painter Moishe Moser, alias Wolf von Landau, and composer and studio artist Horst Siewert, alias Black Fontana - put together this album in 1985, they positioned themselves as somewhat of a bridge between several different worlds. The highly intelligent mix of synth-pop (at the time very popular) and pompous prog-rock encompassed everything, going far above and beyond simply capturing the spirit of the times. The artful lyrics of Moishe Moser contributed to the success of the album, and the singers confidently switched with style between English and German texts; the two were accompanied by an assortment of internationally well-known musicians like Peter Hammill (Van der Graaf Generator), John Ellis (Stranglers, among others) and Larry Elam. John Comerford (today Texas Lightning) sang in the background while Udo Dahmen played percussion. With this band at its backbone, ISLO MOB introduced 10 songs with a beauty and stylish flair that no one has even approached within the past 25 years. "Kaffe & Kuchen" ("Coffee and Cake"), a marvellous SF fairy tale and the only album single, even evolved into a small hit; it was recently rediscovered and featured in the Perry Rhodan compilation "Operation Stardust" (Tribal Stomp/Cargo). This cd includes three bonus titles: "Aufstand im Schlaraffenland" ("Rebellion in Dreamland") was on Side B of the "Kaffe and Kuchen" album single. "Naked Short selling Mix" is a modern version of "Kaffe & Kuchen," not easy to dance to, arranged this year by Black Fontana. "Butterkeks Mix," by DJ Ewige Jugend ("Perpetual Youth"), runs in a similar vein. His reworking shows how timeless the music of ISLO MOB has always been - and will remain.
