From it's beginnings as an ethnic white southern US based music, Country has become a major part of popular music in the western world. It can now boast artists with genuine international appeal and direct influence in world trends. Artists like Kenny Rogers, Del Shannon, Willie Nelson, Gene Pitney and Conway Twitty have all notched up hits, which have crossed over from pure Country success into the pop charts. In the case of Shannon and Pitney they are now generally accepted as being pop artists rather than Country exponents, but especially with reference to their early work it is a Country sensibility which drives the music.
