The music of K'Jarkas is a blend of Andean folk ballads with a political message, representing an authentic native american identity. The band began performing in 1975 in La Paz, Bolivia and became successful relatively quickly and today continue to be incredibly popular not only in Bolivia but also across the whole of Latin America and beyond. The instruments used on this album include the charango, a ten string mandolin shaped instrument, believed to have originated after the spanish invasion of Latin America; zamponas, sikus and toyos - all different sizes and styles of bamboo panpipes; quenas and quenachos - Andean flutes; bombos and chajchas - llama or sheep hooves twisted together and shaken.
