Two women rappers in Cuban underground music scene! La Reyna (English): Reyna Mercedes Hernandez Sandoval (La Reyna) was born on February 8, 1986 in Havana, Cuba. At the age of 15, she opted for a career in Industrial Chemistry which she studied and practised for 5 years. Then, aged 23 she decided to become rapper when she joined a group of women called Alzar la voz, "Raise your voice". In 2012 that she joined Yadira (la Real) to form a duo. La Real (English): Yadira Pintado Lazcano (La Real) was born on February 3, 1986 in Havana, Cuba. At age 17 she graduated as a social worker and practised this career for several years whilst at the same time entering the world of rap, working with several neighbourhood rappers. In 2012 La Reyna and La Real joined each other and created their band. "we joined together as a feminist statement, to show to a world dominated by male rappers that women can also rap. Further it is a way to show and share our experiences in life through rapping". As she puts it "It is a way of seeing the work and creation of two women who from their life experiences give the world a real message to an audience through art. This mixture of sensitivity and strength make a unique union when it comes to projecting a female rapper."
