Folk song researcher John Lomax wrote, 'we found a Negro convict so skilful with his guitar and his strong, baritone voice that he had been made a 'trusty' and kept around Camp A headquarters as laundryman so as to be near at hand to sing and play for visitors. (He) was unique in knowing a very large number of songs, all of which he sang effectively while he twanged his twelve-string guitar . . . I quite resolved to get him out of prison and take him along as a third member of the party.' When it comes to the Blues, Leadbelly was the real deal. He'd done serious jail time, he'd used his talent to win himself a reduced sentence, he'd travelled widely and he knew how to look after himself in the tight situations that unerringly found him.The majority of these 73 titles were recorded almost eighty years ago on early mobile recording equipment. The recording machine - then 'state of the art' - was bulky and cantankerous and the microphone had a limited range. Improvement of some of these recordings is impossible but they remain of great documentary importance. Quite simply, they're history in the making.
