American pianist, arranger and composerLes Baxter (1922-1996) is considered theleading figure in the history of exotica, astyle of easy listening influenced by worldmusic. In 1951, he set the foundations ofthe genre with his landmark Ritual of theSavage LP, for which he wrote the signatureexotica song: "Quiet Village." With hisown orchestra, he released a number ofhits including "Ruby" (1953), "UnchainedMelody" (1955) and "The Poor People ofParis" (1956), which was a #1 hit and soldmore single copies than any other recordingduring that decade. "Unchained Melody"was the first #1 million seller for Baxter, andwas awarded a gold disc. The SWINGPORTLes Baxter series was created to reissuethese perennial hits, many of which hadnever previously appeared on CD. Duringthe '60s and '70s Baxter concentratedon movie scores, working with producersand directors like Nicholas Ray, IngmarBergman, and Howard Koch. Throughout hiscareer he scored over 120 movies, and wasthe author of the theme song "Whistle" fromthe popular TV show Lassie. Ritual of the Savage was originallyreleased in 1951 as a 10" LP containing eight tracks. It was reissued during the mid-late 50's as an 12" LPwith four additional tracks recorded in 1955. The Ritual of the Savage (whose title is a tribute to Stravinsky'sThe Rites of Spring) is considered the cornerstone of the exotica genre, featuring such celebrated songs as"Jungle River Boat", "The Ritual", and, most famously, "Quiet Village".
