Taking a page from 50s crooners, 30s style jazz, and the 60s chanteuse tradition, Lily Frost’s brand of Lounge Pop is a musical hybrid, a blend of forms that gives her music an international flavour. Her romantic live performances emote a dream-like atmosphere in which sultry Latin rhythms and Parisian-style synths transport one to another era, all the while presenting the audience with something still grounded in contemporary experience. Leaving Nettwerk after touring her second solo album, Lunamarium, Lily enlisted the help of ex-Odds member Steven Drake to record Situation at Greenhouse Studios in 2003. Combining harmonium, acoustic guitar, mellotron and a theremin, for the first time Frost felt that she was fully writing, performing and producing her own art. Invigorated with her new sense of creative independence, she left Vancouver for Toronto where she could be closer to her family, but not before stopping in Tahiti to visit Jorge Diaz (from her old band, Colorifics), who had since taken up permanent residence there. Here, among the palm trees, Lily soaked up the local French Polynesian culture, and wrote and recorded "Les Vaisseaux Nocturnes,” during which she was careful not to remove her flip flops and rubber gloves, the only insulation between her and the studio equipment that had been casually grounded in the nearby dirt. Frost's touring has led her to Cairo, Paris, London, New York and Los Angeles. She has recorded and released 7 records to date (both solo and as a member of the Colorifics and Mimosa). Through honest lyrics and earthy delivery, Situation explores love, lust and longing, compassion towards people, and how beauty and art give meaning to our lives. Lily sees songwriting foremost as a means of emotional communication and cathartic release—it can both explore and, at times, resolve our connection to the world around us.
