Mathis Hunter, co-founder of Atlanta's longstanding disco/funk orchestra, Noot d' Noot, has been steadily stripping away extra bells and whistles over the years. On Mother Tongue, Hunter presents his most direct work to date. The record features a four piece band consisting of 2 guitars, bass, drums, and vocals. Taking main stage (sonically speaking) are plenty of harmonized guitar leads that harken back to Hunter's upbringing on a steady diet of Iron Maiden and The Allman Brothers Band, ever-so-slightly filtered through the vaguely fringe Jane's Addiction and with a nod to cult darlings such as The Verve. As Stomp and Stammer's Bobby Moore puts it, "The album sounds like a bunch of veteran musicians took a proverbial toke of the usual influences - Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, Southern rock, funk, '60s psychedelia, garage nuggets, etc. - so they could exhale their own meandering, musical cloud." Now working as a full time DJ in the Atlanta area, Mathis Hunter set out to make a record that would serve as his own piece of ginger to the musical palate he ingests while in the clubs week after week. Without question, this one goes to 11.
