This CD of songs, grittily arranged and edgily produced is noticeably more straight-ahead than ReR's usual releases though it still sits comfortably within the broad range of Steve's tirelessly experimental output. This is a project with a long history: Steve MacLean and his main collaborator Todd Dadaleares have been writing, recording and performing together for longer than MeRCy's 20+ year existence and David Fields (drums) and Tim Inman (keyboards) are also long servers. New for this phase of recordings and shows, is 5-string bassist Greg Goodwin, stepping into Mark Dickey's shoes. MacLean's music, scored in scary detail and then played as if made up on the spot, plus Dadaleares spooky texts pay quiet homage to Steely Dan, understated but there in the confident competence and edgy harmonies. This is America, so they all have day jobs: MacLean as professor of music technology and performance at Berklee, Dadaleares in health robotics, Inman as a computer consultant and Fields in industrial art. The band has been through many stages over the last double-decade, and has made four previous albums. This is the first through ReR. BIO In the late '70s Steve MacLean was playing concerts in New York with the Roswell Rudd Quartet, after which he worked in a busy recording studio and collaborated extensively with Doctor Nerve and its founder Nick Didkovsky. After moving to Maine he co-founded the Portland Experimental Music Collective and since then has performed extensively in all manner of projects, at the same time retaining a series of his own bands, with fairly consistent collaborators. He is now professor of music technology at Berklee and a regular on the Boston improvising circuit.
