Press Quotes

Budapest's BMC - concert hall, recording studio, jazz club, label and all-round creative hub - has provided an invaluable platform for the Hungarian jazz scene and this latest release is a high quality addition to its growing catalogue. While the expected signes particuliers of music from this still relatively unrecognised territory are present and correct, namely themes with a strong echo of a rich folk tradition, this quartet has a character all of its own, with the propulsive percussive chatter and subtle shadings of drummer István Baló standing out in a set of original compositions. Like the best small group offerings the music has both momentum and considerable attention to detail, and the movement between ballads and up-tempo dance numbers serves to underline the ensemble cohesion. Borbély's alto packs a punch but his arsenal of Hungarian reeds - tilinkó, supelka and the more well-known tárogató - brings a range of changing timbres to the table that are as haunting as they are ecstatic. A notable release from a group that deserves an international spotlight for its obvious talent.

—Kevin Le Gendre, Jazzwise, July 2016

Hungarian saxophonist and bass clarinetist Mihály Borbély's new release shows a quartet at a high level of interactive understanding. They can be fairly laid-back (Be By Me Tonight), or driving and rhythmic (Little Bird in the Lee). At times their music incorporates elements of Hungarian folk music, and even hints of Liszt and Bartók, but the result is uniquely theirs. Pianist Áron Tálas is a powerful partner to Borbély's saxophone, and his solos are stellar (check Kosztka). The tunes are all originals, written mainly by Borbély or with another band member. They show compositional variety and intelligent and personal references. At times the folk tradition is appropriately evident and offers a somewhat different sound than many North American bands.

     —Keith Black, Winnipeg Free Press

Borbély must be given his due in the home of Jazz. As a musician, Mihály Borbély is a true original.
