The Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover (1978) is one of Rózsa's last half-dozen scores. In dramatizing the story of the man who set up and headed the Federal Bureau of Investigation for over four decades, writer/producer/director Larry Cohen received the FBI's full cooperation, including permission to film in actual buildings and training sites maintained by the FBI. Broderick Crawford's performance as Hoover captures the obsessive nature of the actual man, a sexually ambiguous and extremely powerful Washington insider who used the federal agency he commanded to compile "private files" of political foes and friends alike. Crawford's performance epitomized Cohen's off-beat sensibility in a movie which had difficulty finding first distribution and then audiences. Consequently, The Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover is almost a "lost" film, and Rózsa's score for it has been the least heard of his last works. The composer believed that Cohen covered a difficult subject well, and, in supplying a musical texture, Rózsa returned to the style that he had used for what he called "my crime period," the years that produced such classic scores as those for The Killers (1946), Brute Force (1947) and The Naked City (1948). The Private Files score here is issued complete (with 13 of its 23 cues previously unreleased).
