Myra Melford's Fire and Water Quintet "For the Love of Fire and Water" - Myra Melford (piano, melodica), Mary Halvorson (guitar), Ingrid Laubrock (tenor and soprano saxophones), Tomek Reid (cello), Susie Ibarra (drums, percussion).

From the CD Liner Notes written by Natalie Weiner:

In the world of improvised music, so-called supergroups sometimes feel almost quotidien. After all, there are so many remarkable artists in the space and understandably, they often want to collaborate.

Yet the group that acclaimed pianist and composer Myra Melford has assembled here -- with Mary Halvorson on guitar, Ingrid Laubrock on soprano and tenor saxophone, Tomeka Reid on cello and Susie Ibarra on drums and percussion -- invigorates that tired cliche? with fresh meaning. Each has an impressive catalog as a bandleader and collaborator, and Melford had worked with all of them previously, but never together. The result is a gathering of some of the most compelling improvisers working today.

Press Quotes

...Each player's actions align with the artistic acts and natural phenomena that gave the project its name, which ensures that even the music's stormiest moments feel very much in tune.

—Bill Meyer, DownBeat June 2022 4 star review

...Like a stroll through a gallery, the 10 tracks pull visitors into the art, with music that sounds alternately aggressive and understated depending on the track...

     —Mike Shanley, JazzTimes

... It stands alone as an entire universe in sound, musical virtuosity, and intimately balanced communication. For now, Melford makes use of all that her quintet has to offer.

     —Thom Jurek, Allmusic Guide

...It may be a cliche to call this music painterly, but Melford's use of colors, textures, and strokes is aesthetically pleasing.

     —Mark Corroto, All About Jazz

The 20 Best Jazz Albums of 2022...The light and dancing quality of Myra Melford's music never means that it sounds hemmed in or excessively pretty.
