This release continues Acrobat's series of in-depth compilations focusing on the work of some of the great arranger/conductor/musician/composers of the post-war era, which has already featured Billy May, Nelson Riddle, Percy Faith and Hugo Winterhalter. Neal Hefti could have made a successful career in any one of the four disciplines, beginning as a trumpeter with Charlie Spivak, Charlie Barnet and Woody Herman, before becoming an arranger for Herman and many other artists and orchestras, perhaps most famously as arranger and composer on Count Basie's landmark "Atomic Mr. Basie" album. Other major artists who benefited from his distinctively stylish and innovative arrangements ranged from jazz heavyweights Charlie Parker, Buddy Rich, Coleman Hawkins and Harry James to pop stars like Mel Torme, Gisele Mackenzie, Dean Martin, Doris Day, Della Reese and Frank Sinatra. He also recorded many fine orchestral concept albums in his own right. This great value 105-track 4-CD set brings together recordings from all these strands of his work in chronological order, covering the initial quarter of a century or more of what provide to be a lengthy and illustrious career. The set includes comprehensive booklet notes by compiler and journalist Geoff Wilding, the originator of our other sets in this series.
