formed in 1986 in Warren, PA by James Reilley (guitars/vocals) & Reese Campbell (keyboards/vocals), folk rock band The New Dylans recorded their eponymous EP in 1986 with the help of John Lombardo and Jerome Augustyniak (both of 10,000 Maniacs) on bass and drums. Pressing up 1,000 copies on vinyl, the duo sent them to everyone on a borrowed 10,000 Maniacs press list. Robert Christgau of The Village Voice ranked the EP among the top 5 EPs of 1987 in the Village Voice's prestigious 'Pazz and Jop Poll' that year. R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe chose The New Dylans as one of his favorite bands of 1987, and the band was also featured on BBC Radio One and MTV shows 120 Minutes and The Cutting Edge. The New Dylans played a handful of acclaimed live shows in 1987 before breaking up at the end of that year. Reforming in 1992, James and Reese recorded new material "Fester" (1992) before signing a record deal with Minneapolis based Red House Records in 1993, with whom they released two critically acclaimed albums "Warren Piece" (1993) and "The American Way" (1995). Demos for a 3rd album (tentatively titled "Joe 6 Track") were recorded in 1996, but the band broke up again before recording the actual album. After The New Dylans split, Reese Campbell formed The Hopheads w/ 10,000 Maniac alum John Lombardo, & then Modified Nouns, featuring Dan Warmbrodt, John McGuire and Paul Liuzzo. Reilley moved to Nashville and has had over 50 songs recorded by artists including Vince Gill, Hal Ketchum and many songs in film/TV. He released a critically acclaimed solo album "The Return Of Buddy Cruel" (2003). In January 2014, The New Dylans (including Ken Coomer of Wilco on drums & Chris Autry on bass) began working on "Meta" a new album of all original material, their first in 18 years. Nashville newspaper The Tennessean documented their entire process of writing/recording "Meta" http://www.tennessean.com/thenewdylans , for release to a full length DVD (in conjunction with PBS) in 2015.
